The average human brain has the capacity to absorb at least 100 000 words per minute, but when most people study their average speed drops to between 125 and 150.  As a result, the brain literally becomes bored and you start to lose concentration.  In order to keep your mind busy you need to read faster so you understand better and take in more information.

In order to read properly you should first of all ensure that your posture is correct.  You back must be straight and resting against the back of the chair, your feet resting firmly on the floor.  Your desk must be at a comfortable height, not too high or low and the book should be held between 45 and 50 centimetres from your face.

Speed reading isn’t an intellectual exercise; it’s just a physical action.  Your IQ will have no effect on your ability to read faster until you reach speeds over 5 000 words per minute.  Remember to study in 45 minute sessions broken by 15 minutes of relaxation such as listening to music or taking a walk. 

Rest your eyes regularly by looking up from your book and focusing on something in the distance.  This will relax the muscles and prevent eye strain and fatigue.
