The Solution
There is a simple solution to curing any bad habit whether it is
to stop
smoking or alleviate OCD(Obsessive Compulsive
Dissorder). The solution can be best explained by an experience
that I had while climbing the Himalayan Mountains. It had been a
breath taking adventure in more than one sense.
At one point I stopped to rest by a little stream. I must have
spent an hour watching with amazement how the water washed over and
around the different shaped rocks. It seemed so content to flow in
whatever direction was suggested by the obstacles. The obstacles
were no problem because, whichever way the water flowed, it made no
difference. The water would finally arrive at its destination -
which was the sea. It was all so perfect. There's a lesson for
mankind, I had thought to myself.
These sacred mountains make you feel as though you have created
the Universe all by yourself. As a Master of the Universe I decided
to have some fun and change my creation. I don't know how long the
water had followed this particular route but it was all about to
change! I started to dam up the existing flow of water so that a new
course or pattern could be opened up. But it was not as easy as it
seemed. The more I tried to dam up the old path that this stream had
forged, the more the current washed away my efforts. I must have
tried for an hour before realizing how ridiculous I was being. It is
almost impossible to stop an old and well-established flow of energy
as the force is too great and all your efforts will be to no avail.
Suddenly the solution dawned upon me. To change the direction of
the flow all I had to do was to remove a small pebble from the place
where I wanted the water to go. By simply opening up an alternative
route for the water to take, nature did the rest. Obviously now that
a small stream of water flowed down the new path, it automatically
washed away other obstacles creating a stronger force which
eventually became the new main flow of water. To my delight the old
path that I had battled to block up before silted up on its own with
no effort from me. "Wow!" I thought, this is exactly how the mind
works. When we try to stop our old thought patterns by fighting
them, the attempt is futile, because the flow is too strong.
However, if we want to change the flow of our thought patterns, all
we have to do is get a trickle of new thoughts going in a different
direction and a new pathway will open up on its own.
Therefore to change any bad habit we simply relax, enter the
'Alpha' state, which is similar to sleep, and repattern our minds
through visualization. By simply imagining a new direction for your
life you have created a new pattern which automatically guides your
thoughts in the direction you desire. Once you have re-patterned the
mind through visualization every thought you have and every step you
take thereafter is in accordance with your new self image. One
suddenly realizes that the age old statement: "Whatever image you
hold before you will come about," is true.
